About the Client

Sanjukta Dutta launched her label in 2012, working almost entirely with the mekhela sador — the traditional two-piece Assamese drape — reimagined in contemporary silhouettes.

She was the first Assamese woman to show at Lakmé Fashion Week, where her 2017 debut solo show had Preity Zinta as showstopper. She showed at New York Fashion Week in 2022 with her collection Alphool, and her work has appeared at Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks. She made her Cannes red carpet debut in 2024, and designed a Muga angavastram for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge during their visit to Assam.

The Challenge

Selling a ₹25,000 handwoven mulberry silk mekhela chador online is a different problem from selling a mass-produced garment, and most ecommerce platforms are built for the second.

A customer at this price point is not comparing specifications. They are judging craftsmanship, colour, drape and occasion, largely from photographs, because the fabric cannot be felt through a screen.

The catalogue is also deep and varied — over 400 products across thirteen categories, many of them one-of-a-kind or produced in very small numbers, which makes inventory behave unlike standard retail. And the audience is global: customers in Assam, across India, and in the diaspora who grew up with the mekhela sador and now live somewhere it cannot be bought.

Core Features

  • Nested category architecture
The catalogue is organised hierarchically rather than as a flat list. Muga sits inside Mekhela Sador, because a customer seeking Muga silk is looking for a fabric within a garment type. Clutches, stoles, footwear and homeware sit inside Accessories.
  • Dedicated Celebrity collection
A separate category for pieces in the register of her red carpet and ramp work, reflecting that some customers arrive looking for an occasion piece and others for something they saw on a ramp.
  • Discovery by colour and attribute
Filtering by colour alongside curated views for featured, best-selling, top-rated, on-sale and in-stock pieces. Colour matters more here than in most catalogues — a customer shopping for a wedding, Bihu or puja often starts from a colour requirement rather than a garment type.
  • Wishlist and product comparison
Built for considered purchases. A customer deciding between three mekhela chadors at ₹20,000 each rarely decides in one session — they return, compare, and often consult family. A store that forgets what they were viewing loses the sale to friction rather than price.
  • Full commerce stack
Customer accounts, order management, free shipping thresholds, coupon and campaign support, and seasonal promotional capability for the festival periods when demand concentrates sharply.

Tech Stack

  • Platform: WordPress with WooCommerce
  • Frontend: Elementor with a custom fashion-retail theme
  • Catalogue: 400+ products across 13 nested categories
  • Commerce: customer accounts, wishlist, comparison, coupons and campaign management

Why This Work Matters

The mekhela sador is woven by hand, and Assam’s handloom sector supports an enormous number of weavers. Demand for high-value handwoven silk sustains the skill; a decline in demand does not merely shrink a market, it ends a craft, because weaving at this level passes through practice rather than instruction.

A designer with international reach who sells directly online can convert global recognition into orders that reach back to the loom. That path — from a Cannes red carpet to a weaver in Assam — runs through a functioning ecommerce platform. That part was ours.
