The Problem
India records over 1,73,000 road deaths a year. NRSM’s premise is that education changes that number more durably than enforcement does, and that it works best when it starts young — children who learn road safety carry it into adulthood, and frequently take it home to their parents.
Turning that premise into a national programme is a logistics problem before it is an educational one. Schools across the country need to enrol, track and manage their own students. Students need to take courses, sit an Olympiad, and receive certificates. Administrators need visibility across every participating school. Those are three different users with three different needs, and building one interface for all of them would have served none of them well.
What We Built
The platform is structured as separate portals against a shared system, each designed around who is using it.
- Public programme site — the main site carries the programme’s methodology, school awards, events, gallery, resources and partner information, and acts as the entry point for schools considering participation.
- Student portal — students log in to access courses, take part in the programme, and download their certificates directly rather than requesting them through a school.
- School administration dashboard — a dedicated portal giving each participating school control over its own students, enrolment and progress, without needing to contact the central team for routine tasks.
- Olympiad platform — a separate system for the NRSM Olympiad, with registration, payment, participation and a public results portal.
Separating these matters more than it might appear. A teacher managing 300 students has almost nothing in common, interface-wise, with a Class 5 student downloading a certificate. Giving each group its own portal keeps every one of them simple, and it means load on one does not affect the others — which is what happens when Olympiad results publish and traffic concentrates in a single hour.
Free Course, Paid Olympiad
The programme runs on a deliberate two-tier structure. The road safety course itself is free, which is the only way a mission aiming at behaviour change across a country can work — a fee at the entry point would exclude exactly the students the programme most wants to reach.
The Olympiad sits on top as a paid, optional layer. Students who want to test themselves competitively register and pay, and over 17,000 have done so.
That structure places different demands on the platform. The free course has to scale to a much larger audience with no payment infrastructure in the path. The Olympiad has to handle registration, payment, scoring and results publication reliably, because a student who has paid has a legitimate expectation that the system will work on the day.
Certificates at Scale
Certificate issuance is deceptively demanding at national scale. Each certificate must be generated per student, be available on demand rather than emailed in a batch, and remain retrievable months later when a student or parent needs it again.
Self-service download removes what would otherwise be an enormous support burden falling on the central team and on school coordinators — a burden that scales directly with programme success, and would otherwise cap how large the programme could grow.
The Olympiad
The NRSM Olympiad turns awareness into participation. Schools report that the competitive element is what shifts students from passive attendance to active engagement — coordinators at participating schools including Christ Church School in Mumbai and Adani Vidya Mandir in Ahmedabad have described the Olympiad as the component that motivated students to explore traffic rules on their own.
Technically it is the hardest part of the platform, because participation concentrates into narrow windows. Results publication in particular produces a traffic pattern where nearly every participant arrives within the same short period, which is why it runs as its own system rather than sharing infrastructure with the courses.
Why This Project Matters
Most software either makes something faster or makes something cheaper. Occasionally a platform’s purpose is to change behaviour, and the measure of success sits outside the system entirely.
A child who learns to check before crossing, who asks a parent to wear a seatbelt, who grows into an adult that does not treat a helmet as optional — none of that appears in a dashboard. But it is what the platform exists to produce, and it is the reason the work was worth doing carefully.
